Avon Haul and Review – Extra Lasting Eyeliner and Mascara

Extra Lasting Mascara and Eyeliner

I have got two great products from Avon to review this time. Our hostel guard is an Avon Representative and a true fashionista! I was introduced to Avon cosmetics by her a few years ago when I started college and though some products have been misses, many of them are true hits!

Last month’s brochure (September) had an offer on the Extra Lasting Eyeliner and Mascara. Buy any for Rs 229 which I thought was a great deal. I picked up the black mascara and the eyeliner in Cobalt.

Avon Extra Lasting Eyeliner in Cobalt

Interestingly, this eyeliner is called Midnight Blue on the carton and the brochure says its Cobalt. I also remember that the green shade of this eyeliner was shown as a purple but called Emerald! Anyway, it’s a lovely shade of deep blue and it’s quite glossy as well. I really like glossy eye liners so I liked the way this one dries.  It comes with a felt tip brush which is kind of flexible so it’s quite easy to use.

Flexible felt tip!

Lovely shade of blue.

Cost: Rs 229 on offer  (I think original price is Rs 389, not sure)

Quantity: 2.5ml

Pros:

1. Glossy finish!

2. Good consistency – not too runny, not too thick.

3.  I really like this colour. Probably also because I love anything blue!

4. The brush is easy to work with.

5. Doesn’t

Cons:

1. While it does last long on my eyes, I feel it’s slightly flaky after I’ve had it on for a while.

2. Quantity is pretty less.

3. Available only through Avon agents.

Avon Extra Lasting Mascara

I can’t decide whether I like this mascara or not. Luckily, my eyelashes are naturally curly and long so I usually skip putting on mascara because I hate the long process of cleaning them off my eyes! The Avon Extra Lasting mascara does make a big difference to my lashes. It makes them look thicker and longer and I love the effect it gives! But then, it clumps a lot and it’s a bit difficult to apply neatly because the consistency of the mascara is weird. It’s a little too thick so the wand picks up lumps of mascara in places. It’s quite difficult to remove as well and I’m a bit particular about removing every single speck of makeup. For Rs. 229 though, I think it does a pretty good job of making my eyes look good. I’m not sure if I’d want to pick it up again though.

The wand is nice but the mascara is a bit clumpy.

Cost: Rs 229 on offer (I think original price is Rs 389, not sure)

Quantity: 7.5ml

Pros:

1. The wand is flexible and has a good design. Makes sure that eyelashes are coated properly.

2. Reasonable price on offer.

Cons:

1. Too thick and clumpy.

2. It’s a pain to remove!

Left : With Mascara
Right: Without Mascara
Both with eyeliner

Health and Glow EN-VY Nail Paints

L-R: Hot Stepper, Plum Love and Cougar Girl.

I got these nail paints from Health and Glow on offer – Buy 2 get 1 free. They had a great selection of colours including bright yellows, blues and greens as well as some sober nudes and browns and some lovely pinks.  My mum and I selected these few shades and that’s why there are no brights 😛

Priced at Rs 49, they really seem to be quite good. I had applied 2 coats of Plum Love (the lilac-y one) and it stayed on my nails for about 3 days without chipping and after that, just minimal chips here and there. If you’re a student like me and don’t want to dish out too much for nail paints, this is a great brand to try.

Miracle Product – Saibol Ointment!

I was in the pharmacy a couple of days ago and my eyes fell on this precious tin! Now let me tell you, I’m a sucker for things that come in tins and have this old vinatgey feel. Incidentally, I also love period dramas and period films ((any Downton Abbey fans?) especially anything related to wars. Anyway so while my mum was getting a long list of medicines, I quickly looked up Saibol on my phone but I couldn’t find any useful information other than their official website so I just picked it up to see what it might be.

I had three HUGE ugly pimples on my face and they just weren’t going away. I thought Saibol might be a good experiment. Believe it or not, in 24 hours, my pimples were visibly reduced and in 36 hours, completely vanished! So basically, I’m in love with this new discovery but I’m also surprised that I couldn’t find any information about it online. But their website says they are a South Indian pharmaceutical company and their products can be found in most places in the south. I found it at the Medplus Pharmacy in Bangalore so I’m guessing several pharmacies must be carrying it.

How I used it – I just washed my face as usual and dabbed a bit of the ointment on my pimples. I did this twice a day – morning and night.

This just caught my eye!

Thick, white ointment with a slight rosy fragrance.

The other side of the tin. You can see the ingredients.

Love the different languages on the sides.

Cost: Rs 17

Quantity: 15 g

I’ve only used this on my pimples. I’m sure about how it works on cuts and boils etc. I think the salicylic acid and boric acid in this ointment really helped to get rid of the pimples. Have any of you tried this product? I would love to hear your take.

Please note: Pimples are caused to due to different reasons for different individuals and it’s best to consult a dermatologist for treatment of acne.

Flormar SUPERSHINE Nail Paint – 48

I just have to put SUPERSHINE in capitals! This nail paint is really, really shiny and can probably even blind someone. That being said, I kind of like it!

Flormar is a Turkish makeup company and I was happy to pick up a few bottles of nail paint at NewU. I really like the colours that were available but I limited myself to two bottles – a purple and a pink. Here are a few photos of the purple!

The problem is that my limited knowledge of photography and the capability of my camera could not capture the real colour of the polish, so you’re going to have to use your imagination a little!

“Shine and Hot” – Whatever that’s supposed to mean!

A little more blue than this…

… a little more purple than this!

Cost: Rs75

Quantity: 10ml

Pros:

1. Lasts long without chipping.

2. Nice colours available in the range.

3. Reasonably priced.

4. Nice, long brush (but I still can’t manage to apply nailpaints neatly!)

Cons:

1. Ummmm… might not be easily available? I’ve only seen these at NewU.

Carmex Click Stick – my life(lips) saver!

My friends and I swear by Carmex! Other lip balms may come and go, but a tub of Carmex has to be there in our bags. This is the BEST lip balm I have ever used (and, this coming from an addict!). I’m not that fond of tubs because my hands tend to get dirty and I hate putting dirty fingers into the tub. So on my last trip to the US, I picked up the Carmex click sticks. There are different varieties like Strawberry and Cherry but I picked up the Original.

The texture of the balm is quite thick but not waxy. It doesn’t feel like some of those lip balms that just tend to sit on your lips. It’s not too sticky either. When you apply it, you might feel a cooling sensation and that’s my favourite part! It just feels very nice and cool on your lips. At least for me, no matter how chapped my lips are, Carmex always soothes and heals them. I like to put a layer on my lips just before going to bed and when I wake up, my lips are really soft.

Cheery red and yellow.

Ingredients

Plain and clear!

Cost:  $4.99 for a pack of 3

Quantity: 4.35g

Pros:

1. Heals the worst of chapped lips.

2.  Contains sunscreen – SPF 15

3. Stick is better than the tub, in my opinion.

4. Lasts really long. Sometimes, after meals, I don’t have to reapply. I can still feel it on my lips.

Cons:

1. Not available in India. A close second which is available here is Blistex.

Product Review: Head & Shoulders Lemon Fresh

This past month in Delhi has caused my hair and skin to be in a bad shape.  My face has become so dry that layers of skin are peeling off! I tried everything but so far, nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Luckily, it’s my last week here and soon I’ll be in Bangalore, where my skin stays much much better.  Even though, I can’t do anything about my dry, peeling skin, I found a great solution to my hair problems. The dry and dusty air of Delhi had made my scalp dry and itchy. I normally use a SLES/paraben  free shampoo but somehow it just wasn’t get the work done. On top of that, I discovered that I had DANDRUFF! Let me tell you, I, very rarely have dandruff and needless to say, I hate it! My solution to dandruff has always been Head & Shoulders. After seeing all the boards in the metro stations advertising for the new Head & Shoulders Lemon Fresh Shampoo, I decided to try it.

I wish I could have taken a few scalp photos to show you how this has worked. It’s a little awkward to ask my PG mates to take a photo of my head 😛 Anyway, this shampoo has really worked wonders and within two-three washes, there was a visible difference.

New Head & Shoulders Lemon Fresh

Long list of chemicals.

Milky pale yellow.

Cost: Rs 129

Quantity: 170ml

Pros:

1. Gets rid of the dandruff!

2. Nice cooling sensation.

3. Reasonably priced.

Cons:

1. Ah the chemicals! I’m going to switch back to my old shampoo after another 2 washes. It scares me to use this on a regular basis.

2. Weird smell. It’s not too bad but I don’t like it much either.
